Nouri was self-referred to The Movement Centre when she was 2 years old. Although Nouri could sit unaided, crawl, high kneel and pull to stand, her movement development had been delayed. Nouri was assessed and found that she had difficulties with her pelvic control. She was supplied with a standing frame to start her 12-month course of Targeted Training therapy, which would involve doing 30 mins daily of hands-free reaching activities and coming back to The Movement Centre every 8 weeks to be assessed. Nouri was set up just below her hips with the addition of a rocking base to target her pelvic control.
At her first review, Nouri demonstrated walking on her knees, independent standing and stepping with one hand held as well as doing a few independent steps. The support on the standing frame was lowered and Nouri was now being supported at the knees with a pad behind with the continued use of the rocking base.
Nouri demonstrated further stepping abilities at her next review. Although she could step independently, Nouri struggled to stand for any length of time and required support to get up from the floor into standing. It was felt that she would still benefit from the use of the standing frame.
By her third review, Nouri was able to stand independently, squat to pick up an object and return to standing without hand support, more confident and stable when walking in shoes and barefoot by stopping and turning to change direction and maintaining balance when stepping over surfaces. The course of therapy finished early due to Nouri’s progress.
Nouri has made amazing progress during her time at The Movement Centre and Targeted Training therapy made a significant impact on her development. It was amazing to see how she went from needing support in a standing frame to being able to stand independently and even walk confidently. Her progress in just a short time shows the power of targeted, consistent therapy and her determination.
Amazing achievements Nouri!
