Hydrotherapy

At The Movement Centre, we offer specialist paediatric hydrotherapy for children with movement difficulties, and is led by Lead Physio Claire. Hydrotherapy uses the unique properties of warm water to support movement, reduce strain on the body, and help children build strength, confidence, and independence in a safe and supportive environment.

What Is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is a form of physiotherapy carried out in a warmer than usual pool under the guidance of experienced paediatric physiotherapists. The warmth of the water helps muscles to relax, while buoyancy supports the body, making movement easier and more comfortable.

This supportive environment allows children to practice movements they may find difficult on land, helping them to improve mobility, coordination, and overall physical wellbeing.

Who Can Benefit from Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy can be suitable for children with a wide range of conditions that affect movement, including:

Any questions? Contact us
Cerebral Palsy
Hydrotherapy can help children with Cerebral Palsy improve strength, balance and movement control in a warm, supportive water environment, reducing the impact of gravity and enabling freer movement.
Global Developmental Delay
For children with Global Developmental Delay, hydrotherapy supports early motor development by encouraging active movement, building core strength, and helping develop confidence in physical activity.
Acquired Brain Injury
Hydrotherapy provides a gentle, low-impact way for children recovering from acquired brain injury to rebuild strength and coordination while relearning movement patterns in a safe, therapeutic setting.
Down Syndrome
Children with Down syndrome may benefit from hydrotherapy through improved postural control, muscle strength and coordination, supporting everyday movement and physical confidence.
Genetic and Neurological Conditions
Hydrotherapy can support children with genetic and neurological conditions by promoting mobility, reducing stiffness, and encouraging functional movement in a calm, supportive environment.
Musculoskeletal Conditions
For children with musculoskeletal challenges, hydrotherapy helps improve joint mobility, alignment and strength while reducing pain and impact on growing bodies.

How Does Hydrotherapy Help?

Together, these benefits enable children to move with greater ease, explore new movement patterns, and build confidence in their physical abilities. The properties of water offer unique therapeutic benefits:

Freedom to Move
Buoyancy reduces the effects of gravity, allowing freer movement
Warm Water Comfort
Warmth helps relax muscles and reduce stiffness
Building Strength Through Resistance
Resistance builds strength and improves control
Supported Stability
Hydrostatic pressure supports posture and balance

Individual Assessment and Tailored Sessions

Every child begins with a full assessment by our specialist paediatric physiotherapy team. Hydrotherapy sessions are then carefully planned to support each child’s physical development, comfort, and safety. Sessions may focus on improving mobility, strengthening muscles, enhancing balance, or supporting relaxation and wellbeing. Families are encouraged to be involved, helping children feel confident and supported throughout their therapy.

A Positive and Enjoyable Therapy Experience

Hydrotherapy is not only therapeutic, it’s also enjoyable. Many children find the water calming and motivating, which can increase engagement and encourage regular participation in therapy. At The Movement Centre, our hydrotherapy sessions are designed to be safe, supportive, and empowering, helping children move more freely and confidently.
