Arlo attended when he was 6 years old, he has a diagnosis of Spastic Quadriplegia, was found to have difficulties with his lower trunk control and therefore it was felt that he could benefit from a course of Targeted Training Therapy.
Arlo was encouraged to do 30 mins a day of action reaching in the frame at home. Arlo enjoyed throwing and catching, playing basketball and tennis in the frame. Over the next few months, the support of the frame was lowered to just below his hips. Functionally Arlo was improving as he was now high kneeling for longer periods, cruising along a plinth and stepping quicker along the parallel bars.
By the end of his 12-month course of therapy, Arlo was just being supported at the knees with a sacral pad behind. At the end of his course Arlo was standing against a sofa, high kneeling for even longer periods, transitioning in and out of side sitting with more ease, stepping up a few steps and a using a bigger stride when stepping with sticks, which he was now using most of the time to get around at home.
Arlo’s mum reported that “Arlo’s overall motor abilities improved. He even surprised us by walking up the steps at the centre holding on to the rails. Arlo can knee walk holding on to a wheely stool and cruise sideways holding onto furniture. He is more confident with his sticks now too. We all loved coming to The Movement Centre. It’s probably the only therapy Arlo has ever been excited to attend and take part in. The staff are amazing and adapted the session to Arlo. He loves sport so we all spent a lot of time running around after balls. At home, Arlo loved doing the therapy program, we were able to use the frame in so many ways including just dance, basketball, baseball, throwing and catching and lots more.”
